Article IV, Section 4 of the Texas Constitution ("Installation of Governor; Term; Eligibility")
As amended November 7, 1972:
The Governor elected at the general election in 1974, and thereafter, shall be installed on the first Tuesday after the organization of the Legislature, or as soon thereafter as practicable, and shall hold his office for the term of four years, or until his successor shall be duly installed. He shall be at least thirty years of age, a citizen of the United States, and shall have resided in this State at least five years immediately preceding his election.
Editor Comments
No provision of the current constitution limits the number of terms or years that a governor may serve.
In contrast, the Texas Constitution of 1845 limited a governor to "four years in any term of six years."
