As amended November 6, 1928:

The Legislature shall provide by law for a State Board of Education, whose members shall be appointed or elected in such manner and by such authority and shall serve for such terms as the Legislature shall prescribe not to exceed six years. The said board shall perform such duties as may be prescribed by law.

Editor Comments

As adopted in 1876, this section read: "The governor, comptroller and secretary of state shall constitute a Board of Education, who shall distribute said funds to the several counties and perform such other duties concerning public schools as may be prescribed by law."

The section has been amended once.

The 15 members of the State Board of Education are elected from single-member districts for staggered four-year terms.

The first sentence of this section provides an exception to Article XVI, Section 30(a) for State Board of Education members.
